Arianna Huffington on Citizen Journalism

Here’s the link:

And here are some key points that Arianna makes:

-Citizen journalism is a rapidly emerging style of journalism, that puts the power to report in the hands of people living within the stories.

-Due to wider availability of media technology and the distribution power of websites like Twitter and YouTube more and more people throghout the world are able to capture and report on events.

-Citizen journalism has the ability to capture events that major media outlets miss, like Politician slip-ups, celebrity miss-steps or perhaps more importantly on the ground events in places that journalists don’t have access to (she uses an example of the recent videos and tweets coming from Iran).

-While citizen journalism allows virtually anyone to be a reporter, journalistic ethics and techniques should still be followed like accuracy, fact checking, and fairness.

– Due to ctizen journalism being so new, many of the ruels are still being written.

I think that this topic will only grow with the new media outlets that she talks about.

Citizen journalism can be both an incredibly valuable tool for the world and at the same time, an incredibly dangerous one. Twitter, Facebook, and other social media outlets do not require fact checking and thus, their is a possibility for the complete fabrication of events.
