Why do you do what you do?
That is a question that we must all ask ourselves. I was talking to an art professor and he asked me what is the purpose of my art or rather why am I drawn to the images that I create? I really had no answer so I wanted to discover that reason. I thought that I knew why but I figured that I would ask family and friends and rethink my reasoning and here is the result.

Why do you do what you do?
Well, I read Sabrina’s blog and I decided to look up multimedia advertising and came up with a ton of stuff not all of it was useful but companies are already using multimedia add campaigns. It is an interesting thing and I think that as long as some one can make a profit it will be done. Here are some ads:
-One for designersx and it is just and ad to get you to visit their site and hire them.
and it goes on and on and on!
So, I love to watch these things! I went to mediastorm and came across some packages about the genocide and rape of women in Africa. I am drawn to those kind of pieces. So what I learned was:
-For dramatic effect and to help the tension build they used a black screen and then images flash by and the black screen comes back and so on. The images move by quickly and hint at motion.
-A lot of the heavy emotional pieces about war and rape are hard cut (no transitions). It adds a heavy feeling
-The colors (if any) are chosen very carefully and black and white are prevalent which helps the viewer to become more active in the piece and have more emotions about the image. Ex: A dead man in color or black and white.. I am more moved by the black and white. Maybe that becasue death is that way.
-The pictures were organized in a way that in the first pic all the weight of the picture would be on one side and then the next picture would be on the other side. The creators of the package not only took good pictures but put it together in a way to make the whole piece balanced.
-the use of light plays a factor. When some one or an event had little hope the image would be darker and when there was hope an image with a light would show up but the light was small or the image would be a little lighter.
-Images with more heavy emotions stayed on the screen longer but sometimes we would move within them.
-EYES! A lot of painful eyes helps to create depth and concern and having a package that holds so much weight, the eyes keep you from looking away.
There is so much editing that goes on that I think I only scratched the surface. Here are the two pieces that I felt touched by and like the editing:
I was really interested in the documentary that was shown in class today and I wanted to finish it and make notes on what I saw.
-The film began with a pic montage that had the “look” of the 50’s film and the music reinforced that feel. It is also notable that this is the era that comic books boomed.
-when dealing with the “superman” character the colors a flat and dull with the exception to his costume. The other character’s colors are not brighter but fuller.
-There is a lot of hard cuts like and action video.
-The whole thing has a comic book persona which helps to support the action character theme.
The whole thing had a sad quality about it. I do not know what to say about it other than the obvious. It was well thought out and well made. It flowed nicely.
A Brother’s Torment
Having an older sister can be a burden for any boy. Nate Celnik was born in 1987 and had the unlucky misfortune of being the second child and what is worse than that, his older sibling was a girl.
People often think that girls are all sugar and spice but that is just a cover to the torment that girls can inflict. When asked of a childhood memory Nate confesses that he has a fear of spit.
“My sister and I shared a room until I was in fifth grade and she was in eighth and needless to say she did not enjoy this at all. Neither did I. What’s worse is that we had bunk beds and she had the top bunk. It was the kind of bunk beds where the top is twin and the bottom was a full and I was often scared that the top bed was going to fall on me”, he related with a smile.
She used to help this fear along with little sisterly taunts and jeers.
“I was so scared that the top bunk was going to fall that I would always sleep on the edge of the bottom bunk. You know that space where the bottom bunk is not under the top bunk. I never wanted to be under it”.
Of course as older sisters do they use this to their advantage, for what is a fear that you cannot exploit?
“So, I thought that I was safe but it turns out that my sister used this for her own fun. At times she would lean over the rail and taunt me with spit”, he said with a queasy smile. “ I mean the kind of spit that you let down and you think that it is going to get on you and then she sucked it back in”, he fidgets a little at the thought of this. “It was so gross”!
Being a younger sibling can be a though trial but having an older sister is worse. They taunt you and tease you and find ways to get at you, but through all that sibling rivalry the bonds that are made are strong and that’s why we look back and smile at those little memories, perhaps with a little fear of spit.
Well since I was not in class today I will just say what my hope is. Since my piece is about self discovery I plan to have the “reality” show “confession room” style. I will send everyone out of the house and sit in front of the camera and just go and hopefully I will come up with some good stuff, of course I will be trying to follow the script. There will be some interviews and with those I will set them up in the same fashion and i will ask them questions but I do not want my own voice to be heard questioning. I want them to talk freely and that is why I want the flip camera because I think that will lower their shyness. We will see how it turns out and try to follow the script as best as I can.
There are several aspects that can make or break both image/video and everyone has their own preferences but I will just state what I have been taught.
-Content, Content, Content! What do you want to convey? If your idea is weak the finished product will be weak. Planning and content!
-The rule of thirds is vital to composition and it helps to focus the viewer and helps them to flow through the piece.
-Composition and color can also make a huge difference. Like said in class you can frame up a shot and later notice that there is a light pole sticking out of a persons head, that would be distracting and cause the frame to be unbalanced (and as such hard or bizarre to look at).
If the color in a shot is too contrasting such as, you want to take a picture of the green woods and then a red bird flys by.. The red in the scene is all that people will be able to focus on (if you do not want the bird to be the focus).
If the colors are really close hues like monochromatic than the image will look drab and unintereseting. the viewer will dimiss the image.
-Lighting is profound! It can add emotion and meaning but can also cause a picture to go terribly wrong if it is not used correctly. As in, if I want to take a picture of my grandma knitting in her arm chair in the living room; the lighting might look normal to my eye but when I take the shot the lighting can dim the image or color it, yellowing etc.. If a spot is oversaturated with light than my image can end up washed out and sometimes blurry. If there is too much shadow/or the light source is from right above and object then the shadows can make it too contrasting and at times it can create unsettling emotions. It is vital that lighting should be treated as an important object.
-Audio can either help to reinforce what a person is going for in a video or it can completely take over. If the music is in the background and it helps support the mood of the scene and not become the focus than the whole piece is stronger for it but if the music is too loud and too strong/distracting the image and audio will not seem like they belong. You must always be careful NOT to create a music video which sometimes happens when putting music/audio to visual.
There is so much more but I think for these purposes I have captured the most important items.
I found a video that i felt was of course Awesome and contained all the shots that we have been studying and very funny so the content is great. Enjoy,
