We looked at the multimedia packages for the Olympics and story boarded them and I noticed that some of the packages seemed better than others, even though they were edited and put together by the same people. The package about the long jumper stuck out at me, and this is because the editing was too choppy. They tried to make the package “interesting” by adding a lot of slow motion and quick cuts, but instead it distracted me from what she was trying to say. I think that a key to multi media packages is simplicity when trying to give a message. It is not that you cannot embellish or experiment, just that if you have a purpose, especially when they are talking, don’t detract from it by giving us too much to watch.
A well designed web site is the epitome of multi media. complicated websites have pictures, text, flash animations, video, music… But just because they are complicated doesn’t mean they are good. In fact, often they are not, being too crowded for to hard to navigate, which is why I say a well designed web site it’s what makes the grade. Having those extra bits is great and really aids the experience, but the real challenge in multi media is how to put it all together.
For example, the new way that the large news corporations are presenting the news. CNN has this “cool” screen where they can zoom in and out of pictures, display holograms and such, but instead of helping to deliver the news, if news you would even call it, it actually distracts the viewer. This is why I much prefer their website. It has all the information, and the video/text that I like to access, but it isn’t crowded. The news room should take a hint from their web disigners.
Every kid wants to be an astronaut, or a doctor, or and actress when they grow up, but few of us have the passion, the talent, or the commitment to live out our childhood dreams. I spoke with a girl today who does.
Sabrina Black sits comfortably in her computer chair, head phones dangling around her neck, waiting for my questions with the confidant ease that comes from knowing how to interview, although most often from my end.
We are class mates in the J school and I’ve always thought of her as contained and able. She takes notes while I surf the web. When our teacher needs an answer, its Sabrina she turns too. At the beginning of our interview today I said, “I know your name, it’s Sabrina. You’re called on a lot.” She smiled and said self-deprecatingly, “I know. I talk a lot.” She has never come off as a know it all but definitely one to watch and I was surprised to find that she was quirky behind her good student facade.
Sabrina is from the small town of Junction City, Oregon. It has only 5,000 people. She and her two sisters grew up knowing everyone, her younger sister being known more as “Sabrina’s sister” than Holli. From the age of 7 she knew she wanted to be a writer. But not a boring writer, no “Babysiter’s Club” junk for her, Sabrina liked R L Stein’s “Goosebumps” and mystery novels. “I’ve always wanted to write young-adult books and I thought this would change as I got older, but it hasn’t. I just remember being in middle school and have the hardest time finding books I liked. I’d read them and think, ‘pssshhh, I could do better than this.'” She tells me she hates researching, which a lot of adult novels require, so young adult is the perfect genre.
I ask her about how she resarches as a journalist, if she hates researching so much. “I perfer doing projects that focus on one person, really getting to know that person and then going from there. This assignment is perfect actually.” And it is. Her article about me is already posted, and it’s a good one. I have perfect faith that with her, living her dreams is a possibility.
I plan on using a very casual style for my interviews because I will be in the middle of a festival and setting up a formal interview isn’t a very viable option. I will be interviewing the people at the festival, as well as the coordinator and volunteers. The only interview I have set up is with the festival coordinator but other then that I am just going to play it by ear. I am trying to get a press pass as I think that people will be more willing to answer questions for an official looking person.
Som thing that I think will be hard for me is phrasing my questions so that they are open ended but not short answer. In the past I have had to pull teach to get long answers, so I’m working on that.
I looked at an article from Mondays Emerald about duck uniforms and compared it to the online version. This article did not have a multimedia package as a counter part so the main difference was the amount of pictures available. In the print version, there were only two pictures. In the online version, there are six. There is also a place to comment on articles in the online version, so you can discuss with other users your thoughts on what was presented. This aspect seems really cool because it creates a dialogue that print media doesn’t have. It also has “share” buttons on the bottom so you can easily share the article with a friend via facebook or google. None of these features make the actual writing any better or worse, but they do add to the piece as a whole.
What makes a successful multimedia story is the use of multimedia. Multimedia stories can be crowded with special effects or buttons or too many pictures and in this way the media isn’t aiding the story. A good story has all the pieces needed plus a little more, not a ton. Just like any good story, the subject should be engaging on it’s own first, otherwise why bother? This is not to say it has to be important or life changing, although thats great, often the most popular stories are just for fun or are parodies, but regardless of what it’s about the subject has to be interesting. As already stated the use of multimedia has to make sense and add to the story either by giving additional information or interesting visuals. Media for medias sake can take away from a story so one need to be careful of that.

This is obviously a cheeky way to teach entomology but her multi media use makes it interesting to watch. The pictures coming in and out of the frame give a good visual and add to the story rather then detract. Some of the noise is a little too loud and the money flipping is slightly distracting, but over all it is a pretty good use of multimedia to help tell a story.
